The Haunting of Hill House - Shirley Jackson, Laura Miller

This book scared me. On the first unsuspecting night that I started reading it, I woke up around 2am and tried to use it to put myself back to sleep.

Big mistake. Huge.

There's probably been a million words written about this book and probably a thousand people that were inspired by it and I can see why. Atmospheric, prettily written, plays on all the senses - I was caught up in the cold spot and snuggled a little deeper in the blanket. I only wish it didn't get so unwieldy in the end. I know it had a purpose, but it felt rushed and consequently, anticlimactic. Still, I loved the suspenseful storytelling and the fact that I cared about the characters just upped the ante.

A keeper and a good re-read for a Halloween fright.
